i'm reluctant to blog over the clark coolidge post because i love his words more than mine right now.

however. i'm going to let you know that if there is any question in the world that i'd like to remove from all conversation... or maybe even just conversations with ME... it is : so, what do you do?

this, after, say 15 minutes of conversation with my wonderfully conversational PhD student and partner.

when i feel defensive i say: i write.

when i feel amused i say: i walk dogs.

lately i just feel annoyed by the question. so my answer, after a long pause, is: i work and i write.

this i am posting because i am willing to bet that there are other PhD candidate's partners in the world with the exact same *issue.*

to you young & single PhDers out there: DO NOT ASK THIS QUESTION.

if you must. DO IT BEFORE 5 MINUTES OF CONVERSATION RE : YOU AND THE UNIVERSITY has passed.

after that it is just annoying & comes off as *just being polite.*

and, honestly, after that... i'm not going to be very polite. i'm just going to be bored.

***

i post this because i CARE.

i post this because it seems to be a daily occurence.

lucky for me there is Lucipo & some Duke PhD's [and ers] that are also Poets.

thank you for listening.

one strange thing about this new homeland is the large number of senior citizens jailed/charged for selling drugs out of their homes. today, a 93 year old man.

the many things this can mean.

mostly, though, maybe durham is NOT the city to grow old in... since you might have to sell drugs to pay yr bills.

Is this what it means to be an academic in America?

Yesterday on my night stand was a copy of The Communist Manifesto right next to Suze Orman's The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous and Broke and The First-Time Homeowner's Handbook: A Complete Guide and Workbook for the First-time Home Buyer. I almost took a picture when I finally noticed the comic constellation. These are all books I recommend, by the way. I think, though, Orman's is probably the most useful for poets. She's a lesbo I hear.

i've decided against visiting SF next month. too soon. too soon.

so.

you'll just have to come to durham.

especially you, Sara Wingate Gray.

i'm seriously considering flying out to SF next month for robin blaser. i'm not sure if i should. first off... maybe it is too soon for me to be in San Francisco again. it could make me feel even more homesick than i feel already. i like what ken rumble said to me... "you could be in Paris and still feel homesick." it isn't about Durham being "bad." it is about San Francisco being where i lived and where i always wanted to live growing up.

what i like about durham is i only work 5 hours a day. and i can spend the rest of my time writing... or... when we've actually finished setting up house i can spend the rest of my time writing. i actually prefer the high heat to the SF freezing ass summer. the music scene is awesome. people have time to spend... you can actually get things DONE here. there are a lot of super creative people and they all seem to crave the company of others so there is a community here that is up & ABLE to spending time doing what it is they really want to do. in SF i was tired ALL THE TIME. and sick. i worked my ass off and maybe would get out to one of the millions of events and then crash. maybe it was choice fatigue [and i said no a lot] but there is no choice fatigue here. not yet.

[there is heat fatigue.]

anyway, i was saying i might go see robin blaser in SF because i really would like to see him & my pals... i've never seen robin blaser read & i feel like i should take advantage of the opportunity. but then... there are so many places i haven't been on this side of the country... like DC, kaplan , how do we know what's going on there?

we'll see. i may not be ready to tease myself with SF right now. i may have to venture to Philly or New York instead.
