new news

our concerns regarding North Carolina & Duke have been taken on & up & tossed away. we have received MANY emails of support & welcome from Duke PhD's, Durham/Raleigh residents, & Poets. we feel really good about going there & everything we've been hearing. we are especially excited because Tony Tost is attending Duke & has already offered us a great deal of his [& his wife's] hospitality. [& Chris Vitiello is in Durham, too.

so. we are about 95% sure that we will be moving to Durham, NC in June. [maggie has already asked me five million times if i've sent off job applications & arranged interviews with Duke & UNC MBA programs.]. & also we have made arrangements to see some houses while we are there next week.

of course, if there is some discrimination against small, blind, cross-dressing, Percy Poodles... then it is all history. the whole plan. no PhD is worth losing Mr. Poods.

****
in other news, i am happy to see that suzanne stein has joined the blogging world as a blogger over there with stephanie young. there was a little movie featuring the two but i see that maybe it has been removed or my computer is lying to me? hmn...

in any case... welcome s. i hope it isn't the only way we get to see you before we leave.

the trouble with North Carolina

yeah... it seems really great. beautiful, cheap, Durham is Democratic & liberal in the majority....

but.

but.

we have no rights in North Carolina.

i was just looking into the laws there...

i didn't expect to find Domestic Partnership laws for us Homos there... [& i was not surprised]

but we aren't protected from discrimination at all. AT ALL.

housing, employment... it isn't even a hate crime to beat us up or kill us.

WHAT'S UP NORTH CAROLINA?

so. yeah. that just doesn't make me happy at all.

i expected SOME protection.

o, but they have an LGBT Film Festival & a Parade.

wow.

this is disappointing. very.

& frightening.

is ANYBODY out there reading this? is it dangerous to be gay in Durham, Chapel Hill, Raleigh?

because it seems risky.

i wasn't expecting anything like here in SF.
but... NO RIGHTS?

WTF???

essay question continued.

essay question:

why have we been unable to create inclusive capitalism?
Labels: global economics

brian dean bollman said:

Inclusive capitalism? On the one hand, capitalism is (in theory) available to all, and therefore inclusive by definition. On the other hand, the word "inclusive" suggests a communal attitude, and since capitalism relies upon individual self-interest to function, "inclusive capitalism" might seem self contradictory. What do you envision when conjuring that term?

*****

firstly, i’m glad that brian responded to my essay question. thank you brian.

my new obsession is getting a Green MBA & so i have been doing a lot of research on this subject of “inclusive capitalism” – a term that, alas, i cannot take credit for, but that is in the regular ole jargon of business speech. [though maybe not enough.]

i think the perception that capitalism is... as you say “(in theory) available to all” but not in practice is something that needs to be examined. not only by ourselves but also by the many MNC’s that seem to adhere to this “in theory” only attitude.

for one... they cannot prosper without the consumer, no matter how hard they might try. & so, the consumer is still quite powerful in this dynamic.

the truth is that any business with a consumer base cannot rely on “self-interest” to be successful. it can, however, have some business practices that are solely in the interest of SELF... & by these i mean the scary unethical kinds... the ripping away of human dignity & the destruction of the planet, to name but two.

anyway.... the reason i bring this up is that there are so many amazing, ethical, environmental, & PROFITABLE businesses in India, & a few in Mexico & Brazil... that bring high quality goods & high quality education to a few of the 80% of the people in this world who are in poverty.... that i’m wondering what can be done in THIS country.

maggie & i have this fantasy that we can open the IDEAL factory in camden, NJ... employ locals, boost the economy, & eradicate poverty.

so. this is all just a work in progress.... a goal for me while i study for the GMAT.

well. one of my goals. the other is to get at least one multinational corporation to go completely green.

i think this is worth noting

the minister who says he is jesus, but then, o, no, he's NOT jesus, he's the anti-christ

this crap scares me.

** friends of poetry ** Frank Sherlock EMERGENCY FUND ** please read ASAP!******

The following link is for everyone to use on blogs and other online media: HERE

Our good friend Frank Sherlock was rushed to the hospital January 22nd with a sudden and mysterious illness which turned out to be a serious case of meningitis. He needed emergency surgery, and also suffered a heart attack and kidney failure as a result of symptoms related to the illness.

The timing could not be worse as this attack of meningitis happened during the two month window in which Frank is without health insurance.

His friends have come together to help raise money at this critical time. We are reaching out to other friends and the poetry community on Frank's behalf. Please consider sending donations for his hospital bills, physical therapy, as well as his very expensive medications and other needs.

If you can make a donation by check or money order at this time please send it to Frank's longtime friend Matthew McGoldrick.

VERY IMPORTANT: Please make check or money order out to Matthew McGoldrick, and send to his address:

YES.

i am quite happy with Peyton Manning & the Colts today.

quite.

even though we at a lot of Polish Meats & drank a lot of Polish Beer & it seemed like somehow we had jinxed the Colts because Chicago has more Polish folks outside of Poland than anywhere else in the world & that is why Maggie decided they should win the Superbowl... but. NO. they didn't.

now .... if only the Minnesota Vikings make it next year...

***

& only one person has responded to my essay question... thank you brian. i will respond in turn.
